When did Apple actually start slowing older iPhones ?

In an argument right now with friends and trying to clear some misinformation. Open to finding out I am right or wrong.

I know Apple finally got caught in 2017 over the iPhone 6. Batterygate and a bunch of law suits ensued. iOS was patched and Apple gave the world $29 battery replacements.

Can anyone point me towards some evidence of when the whole saga started ? I remember iOS updates crippling my iPhone going back to the 4. Hard to find news stories before 2017 as that is when it became a global story.

Thank you all!
