OnePlus’ newest Nord phones won’t be updated past Android 11

The new OnePlus Nord phones, the N10 5G and the N100, are questionable choices by the company. It’s not to say they are terrible phones, but they aren’t exactly the stand-out devices that OnePlus has been pumping out over the last couple of years. The latest development on these devices is OnePlus has confirmed to Android Central that the N10 and N100 will only be upgraded through Android 11. These two Nord devices come with Android 10 out of the box, so it was assumed that OnePlus – with its excellent history record of updating devices – would eventually push an update to Android 11. As...

There's a purple Sony Xperia 5 II in Japan

Sony's Xperia 5 II is theoretically available in four colors across the globe: black, grey, blue, and pink. That said, not all of those are necessarily up for grabs in all markets. And to make things even more interesting, there's actually a fifth hue in which Sony is offering the Xperia 5 II, but only in Japan. Meet the purple Xperia 5 II for Docomo, Japan's biggest carrier. It sits calmly in its roster alongside the four other colorways, looking pretty while it's at it (although the grey fingerprint sensor does stand out in a rather weird way). As you might have guessed, on the...

Samsung pushes another update to address Galaxy S20 FE touchscreen issues

Last month, Samsung sent out two updates for both 4G and 5G variants of the Galaxy S20 FE that aimed at fixing a touchscreen issue that was affecting some users of the phone. Before any fixes were issued, the phone would register ghost touches and jittery movement when scrolling or zooming. A new update is now rolling out for the Galaxy S20 FE, but initial reports of the update – which mention the touchscreen issues in the changelog – still don’t fix the issue entirely. The update’s build number is G781BXXU1ATK1 and the new firmware began rolling out this week. One of the bullet...

Top 10 trending phones of week 45

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max reigned our trending chart for a long time and in a weird twist it was taken down by a couple of rumored phones part of Xiaomi's Redmi lineup. The Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 9 5G appeared in a couple of major leaks and clearly got a lot of people excited. Combined with the iPhone 12 Pro Max hype dying down a bit it pushed the new Apple flagship down to third place. It will certainly hope to do better next week when its market availability starts. The newly announced Huawei nova 8 SE vaulted to fourth, while the Poco X3 NFC regained some of its old...

This upper-midrange device was launched alongside the Edge+, for a pretty penny. Its recommended retail price is $699.99, and while it was around $200 off for pre-orders, today's deal tops that. Amazon is now offering the Edge for just $399.99 unlocked, and this is the US model too, so you won't have to worry about missing bands or not getting a warranty or any such shenanigans. The new Xbox Series consoles will start shipping to fans next week on November 10. However, one lucky redditor got their Series S console early and confirmed that there is a significant chunk of storage dedicated to system functions. The Xbox Series S has a 512GB SSD built in, of which 364GB are available for game installations. Similarly, the Series X console has a 1TB SSD, of which 802GB are available. So that’s about 30% of memory reserved on the S and 20% on the X. This reserved storage is for the OS as well as the Quick Resume feature, which needs to store gigabytes of game...

iPhone 12 Pro video teardown goes hunting for magnets

As usual, following his traditional durability test, YouTuber Zach from the JerryRigEverything channel then goes on to tear down a phone on video. In this case, we're talking about the iPhone 12 Pro. The device's Ceramic Shield front glass was found to scratch just like regular glass, but what about what's underneath? That's where the teardown video comes in, to reveal everything that Apple packed inside the iPhone 12 Pro, all the different components and their various connectors. You'll also notice how hard it is to 'get in', along with Apple's love for a specific type of connector (and...

Weekly poll: will the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100 fly or die?

In the beginning, OnePlus released only one phone a year. Then two. In 2020, the company has already unveiled six new models (not counting carrier-specific variants) and it’s the last two phones that are now in the spotlight. The two Nord-series phones are the most affordable OnePlus devices yet, but at what cost? Well, the OLED panels are gone, for starters, replaced by LCD. And the premium chipsets are no more. Let’s have a closer look, starting with the better-specced model. The OnePlus Nord N10 5G costs €350/£330, which is €50/£50 less than the original Nord (in the 8/128 GB...

Flashback: remembering the best Tegra-powered phones, tablets and "others"

Nvidia is in the process of acquiring ARM, which made us think of the time when the company, which is best known for its GPUs, was actually a major player in the smartphone market. Here are Tegra chipsets' greatest hits. Two of the first Tegra-powered phones were the Microsoft Kin One and Two, which we've covered in a previous Flashback. Unfortunately, that chipset proved quite under-powered for the kind of UI that Microsoft wanted to run. But that was an early single-core chip. Microsoft Kin One • Microsoft Kin Two The Tegra 2 brought us the first dual core smartphone, the LG...

The retail box of the phone consists of a Huawei SuperCharger that lets you top the phone at up to 22.5W. The technology was initially introduced with the company flagships and it is good to see it trickle to the lower echelons. We have to go through our usual battery...

iPhone 12 cameras can only be replaced by official Apple technicians, 12 Pro is unaffected

Back when Apple added a fingerprint reader to the iPhone 5s, it made it impossible to replace by anyone other than an authorized technician. That makes some sense – a bogus reader may circumvent security. But over the years more and more components have become difficult to replace. During its teardown and testing of the iPhone 12, iFixit found that taking the camera out and replacing it with an identical module from another phone causes issues. And not just the error report you get when you swap screens (“Unable to verify that this iPhone has a genuine Apple display”). No, this looks...

On the other hand, the OnePlus 9 Pro seems to only be on the way to T-Mobile, with Verizon seemingly foregoing the more expensive option. The OnePlus 8 was also offered by Verizon There are very good hints about all of this in the OxygenOS code, but...
