Major Saudi online retailer leaks Moto One Macro

The latest variant of the Moto One series was spotted on a Saudi Arabian retail website, but the listing has been taken down. A tipster provided us with an image of the phone and some of the specs from the listing. The spotted device is called the Moto One Macro and its headline feature could be a 2MP macro camera. It has two other main cameras: a main 13Mp sensor and another 2MP sensor, which we suspect to be a depth sensor. Moto One Macro Based on the image above, we are also looking at laser assisted autofocus and a rear fingerprint scanner. There is also a...

Khatabook raises $25M to help businesses in India record financial transactions digitally and accept online payments

Even as tens of millions of Indians have come online for the first time in recent years, most businesses in the nation remain offline. They continue to rely on long notebooks to keep a log of their financial transactions. A nine-month old startup which is digitizing the bookkeeping and allowing merchants to accept online payments just raised a significant amount of capital.

Khatabook, a Bangalore-based startup, said on Tuesday it has raised $25 million in a new financing round. The Series A round for the startup was funded by GGV Capital, Partners of DST Global, RTP Ventures, Sequoia India, Tencent, and Y Combinator. A clutch of high-profile angel investors including Amrish Rau, Anand Chandrasekharan, Deep Nishar, Gokul Rajaram, Jitendra Gupta, Kunal Bahl, and Kunal Shah also participated in the round. The startup has raised $29 million to date.

Khatabook operates an eponymous Android app that allows small and medium businesses to keep a log of their financial transactions and accept payments online. The app, which was launched on Google Play Store in December last year, has amassed 5 million merchants from more than 3,000 cities, towns, and villages in India, Ravish Naresh, cofounder and CEO of Khatabook told TechCrunch in an interview this week.

The app, which remains free of charge, was used to process transactions worth more than $3 billion in August, said Naresh. Most merchants in developing markets are not online currently. They continue to rely on logging their financial transactions — credit, for instance — on notebooks. As you can imagine, this methodology is not structured.

Even has Reliance Jio, a telecom operator launched by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, upended the Indian market and brought tens of millions of Indians online for the first time in last three years, most businesses in the country are still carrying out their operations without the use of any technology, said Naresh. “Could we build an app that makes it very easy for merchants to digitize their bookkeeping?” he said.

“As soon as we launched the app, we instantly started to go viral,” he said. For several months now, the startup is seeing 20% growth each month, he said. In six months, the app has helped businesses recover $5 billion in previously unpaid credits, Naresh claimed. Without any marketing, the app has also gained a significant number of users in Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, said Naresh.

“At Khatabook, we have taken early but significant steps towards leveraging this trend to digitize India’s shopkeepers. For most of our merchants, we are the first business software they’ve used in their entire life. And we will continue to build more India-first innovations to further enable the growth of what is still a largely untapped sector,” he said.

In a statement, Hans Tung, Managing Partner of GGV Capital, said, “as a global investor, we seek out founders who understand the local market and respond to growth opportunities with speed and agility – we certainly see this with the Khatabook team.”

Naresh, a cofounder of property startup Housing, said the startup will use the capital to build new features to serve merchants. In next 12 months, Khatabook will aim to add 25 million businesses, he said.

AR IN SOCIAL MEDIA: How immersive experiences drive sales, improve customer engagement, and boost awareness (FB, SNAP)

Augmented reality's (AR's) ability to link our digital and physical worlds is transforming the way brands engage with consumers on social media. FORECAST Global Mobile AR UsersDigital titans Snapchat and Facebook are monetizing consumers' love for AR with ads and branded experiences, opening the door for brands to use a new means of creativity and immersive storytelling to reach consumers in a way they appreciate and respond to.

While the use of AR in social media is still in early stages, the immersive technology is already becoming impossible for brands to ignore. This fun, memorable, and convenient way to merge a brand into consumers' lives is catalyzing the way brands escalate converted sales, drive consumer engagement, and lift brand awareness.

With AR ads expected to generate over $13 billion in revenue by 2022, and, as a result, account for over 12% of all mobile ad revenue by that year, it's crucial brands map out their AR strategies now to secure an early-mover advantage.

In the AR in Social Media Report, Business Insider Intelligence dives into the growing social media AR ecosystem; explores why brands should integrate AR into their ads and branded experiences; outlines how brands are benefiting from embracing this new, immersive form of content delivery; and probes what's ahead for the space.

The companies mentioned in this report are: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Snapchat, and WhatsApp.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

  • The number of mobile AR users is expected to have grown 100% year-over-year (YoY) in 2018 to pass 1 billion, and social media is quickly becoming consumers' go-to channel for mobile AR experiences.
  • Consumers' viral acceptance of AR in social media underscores why brands need to embrace the technology to enhance their social strategies, and it's already proving to be an effective channel for engaging consumers and expanding their reach.
  • There are three clear goals brands are striving to achieve when implementing AR in their social media strategies: escalate converted sales and downloads, drive consumer engagement, and lift brand awareness.
  • Additionally, there are numerous indications that the technology will improve in the near future, which will play a chief role in driving brands' AR usage within social media.

In full, the report:

  • Sizes mobile AR adoption in social media and identifies the factors driving uptake among both consumers and brands.
  • Details how brands stand to benefit from leveraging AR in social media and offers an inside look into how it has played a role in helping brands achieve their goals.

Former employees from WeWork share stories about Adam Neumann running around barefoot, yelling at employees, and demanding cases of tequila

wework adam neumann 4 4x3

Ask anyone who has worked closely with ousted WeWork CEO Adam Neumann and you will likely hear stories about him walking around barefoot.

He walks barefoot in the office, people close to him tell us. He walks barefoot around the Hamptons, where he owns a home, people who have seen him there tell us. And he also walks barefoot around the streets of New York, according to a photo of him posted on Reddit.

The photo was posted a day after Neumann resigned as CEO. And although the person who posted it said it was taken right before that news broke, we were unable to determine when it was taken.  A person close to him tells us Neumann was wearing different clothing on the day he stepped down.

When Business Insider talked to dozens of former employees about what it was like to work at WeWork under Neumann's tenure, we heard three types of stories repeatedly: seeing him barefoot, his love for an expensive brand of tequila, and his outbursts.

Neumann was seen as the fiery, inspirational visionary, current and former employees told us. Multiple employees who worked closely with him, some from the early days, said his ability to motivate employees and "pitch the living hell out of the company," was his superpower.

They described him as quick to celebrate with shots of his beloved $140/bottle Don Julio 1942 tequila. But he could grow "furious" if shot glasses weren't handily available, one former employee us.

Another former employee remembered two demands every time Neumann visited a WeWork location: cases of Don Julio 1942 – "if you don't have that, he will lose his sh*t" – and music blasting at party volumes. "Our paying customers would be complaining about how loud the music was, but if we turned it down, we'd get screamed and yelled at by Adam and his team."

This person also remembers, "He would run around the office barefoot. He would jump on his desk, or jump on the conference table barefoot and yell at people."

Not all of that yelling was negative. Some of it was exuberance.

A third former employee described working with Adam like this: "A lot of WeWork feels like a never-ending party. It's always up or down, and Adam's screaming both ways, happy or not."

This has been a tumultuous few weeks for Neumann since the company released its pre-IPO filing. Intense public scrutiny ensued over the company's business model and governance. And last week, WeWork announced that Neumann had given up most of his voting power and resigned as CEO, staying on as non-executive chairman.

Neumann said the focus on him had become "a distraction" for the company. A statement given to Business Insider by Neumann's representative in response to our investigation into WeWork's culture and leadership said: "while there may have been some growing pains, the results speak for themselves: a nurturing work environment that is inspiring, respectful, and attuned to bringing out the best in people."
