Have video games helped revolutionize the programming world?

Just wondering if video games have revolutionized the software or programming world. Or if it was the other way around. For example if the development of AI for video games has contributed to deepening the understanding of AI in general. There's also other specific examples. Like resident evil 2 for n64 (compressing over 1.4 GB in 128 MB with little to no compromise) or pokemon crystal.

Basically, have video games improved the industry or was it the other way around?
